Mac and Wild
I was lucky enough to visit Mac and Wild for the launch of their new Wild Brunch, a Scottish inspired array of plates and cocktails.
The menu lists many quintessential brunch staples but all with an earthy, Scottish riff. Those in search of a full English can enjoy the Scottish Breakfast with Haggis, tattie scones and white pudding.
My friend and I opted for a healthy cross-section of the menu, keen to get the most out of the highland spread. The latte lover in me was disappointed at the lack of coffee options available, but doing things the Scottish way meant knocking back a couple of Bucks Fizzes - a very worthy caffeine replacement!
First out of the blocks came pecan pancakes with caramelised banana, honey and sweet cream. The pancakes were light and had delicious chunks of pecan throughout. The caramelised banana added a lovely sweetness and the portion size was spot on - we were left comfortably full after these.
No brunch is complete without avocado on toast and this crushed avocado on toasted sourdough was a delicious, pared-back version. The sourdough, stacked high with dollops of avocado was simple and it worked.
But the absolute star of the show and the one dish that is worth the trip alone was the bacon sandwich. This wasn't just any old bacon sarnie, this was a candied bacon sandwich with béchamel sauce and bone marrow gravy. It was deliciously decadent.
The béchamel oozed out of the bacon sandwich which came with a pot of bone marrow gravy so you could dip - and double dip - to your heart's content. The gravy was thick and earthy, and the whole dish was unlike anything I had seen before on a brunch menu. It was unanimously declared the best dish and is something I really can't recommend enough!
Wild Brunch is served every Saturday 11.00-16.00 at Mac and Wild City and Saturday and Sunday 11.00-16.00 at Mac and Wild Fitzrovia. Bookings can be made here.
